About Tallwood Elementary School
Tallwood Elementary School opened on September 5, 1989, as part of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. It takes its name from the historic "Tallwood" house, built in 1740 by the Nicholas family on a plantation south of Kempsville; according to school history, the property owner planted one of every tree native to Virginia on the land. Many homes of current students now stand on land that was once part of the Tallwood plantation.
The school sits at 2025 Kempsville Road in the Kempsville section of Virginia Beach and serves students in pre-kindergarten through grade 5. NCES classifies its setting as "City, Large."
