About Alanton Elementary School
Alanton Elementary School opened in 1966 in the northern part of Virginia Beach, Virginia. According to the school, it was built to relieve overcrowding at John B. Dey Elementary, initially housed grades 1-7, and was the first elementary school in Virginia Beach constructed with a gymnasium. A later expansion added a library-media center, computer lab, art room, and additional classrooms. The school now serves pre-kindergarten through grade 5 as part of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
The school sits in the Alanton neighborhood, an established residential area in northern Virginia Beach named for architect Alan McCullough, whose family acquired land there in the early 1920s. The area lies near Baycliff and Cape Henry, and students continuing beyond elementary are served by Lynnhaven Middle School and First Colonial High School.
