About Thoroughgood Elementary School

Thoroughgood Elementary School is a public school in Virginia Beach City Public Schools, serving grades PK-5 at 1444 Dunstan Lane in the Thoroughgood section of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The school and surrounding neighborhood take their name from Adam Thoroughgood, a 17th-century English colonist and early Virginia burgess whose land grant covered much of the area; the nearby Adam Thoroughgood House (circa 1680) is a National Historic Landmark located separately from the school campus.

The current school building opened in 2016, replacing an earlier facility of more than sixty years on the site. Thoroughgood Elementary is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education and consistently posts SOL pass rates above state averages. In 2024-2025 it enrolled roughly 767-768 students and is classified by NCES as being in a large-city locale.
