Highland Parish is a compact community of larger single-family homes in south-central Virginia Beach. It is tucked off Salem Road south of Elbow Road in the 23456 ZIP code. Ainslie Homes began the roughly 60-acre, 112-lot neighborhood in 2005. The builder set it around a 20-acre preserve and park with a playground and walking trails. So most short streets and cul-de-sacs back up to the wooded preserve, a pond, or the central green. Those streets are Caitlan Loch Lane, Lily Loch Court, Tartan Trail, Border Way, and Parish Cove Court. Homes are mostly two-story, with some ranch plans. They generally run 2,500 to 4,000 square feet with four to six bedrooms. A few wooded estate lots along the community's edge run from two acres to more than eight. Hillcrest Farms sits right to the west. Salem Lakes and Newcastle are to the north. The Landstown and Princess Anne corridors are a few minutes east.

Daily life in Highland Parish centers on the preserve and park. They give the neighborhood its shape. An open green with the playground and walking trails sits in the middle of the community. A wooded buffer runs along its western and southern edge. Several homes look straight out over park or preserve. The neighborhood's single entrance keeps through-traffic out. Salem Road is the way in and out. To the north, it meets Lynnhaven Parkway and the Independence Boulevard corridor toward I-264 and Town Center. To the south, it ends at North Landing Road. That road runs east to the Virginia Beach Municipal Center, about two miles on. Everyday errands run to the shopping centers where Salem Road meets Lynnhaven Parkway. Or go up Salem Road to Dam Neck Road. Then head east to Landstown Commons at Princess Anne Road and the retail around it. All of that is within a few miles. Stumpy Lake Natural Area is a short drive west on Elbow Road. It has a kayak launch, fishing, and trails. The Princess Anne Athletic Complex, Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, and the Virginia Beach amphitheater are close by. NAS Oceana lies about six miles to the northeast. The Dam Neck Annex is about six miles east, in a straight line. Virginia Beach City Public Schools serves the community, generally New Castle Elementary, Landstown Middle, and Landstown High School.
Highland Parish homes for sale are detached single-family houses on about 110 lots. City assessor records show most were built between 2005 and 2009. Later phases added homes through 2020. The two-story and ranch plans stress open living areas, sunrooms, nine-foot first-floor ceilings, and first-floor primary suites. Several of the original models were drawn by Southern Living designer Frank Betz. Assessor records put the typical home near 3,500 square feet. Most fall between about 2,900 and 3,900. Recent REIN listings have run roughly 3,300 to 3,600 square feet with five or six bedrooms. Asking and sale prices ran from about $750,000 to just under $960,000.
