Alanton is a 1960s neighborhood on the Great Neck side of Virginia Beach, in ZIP 23454, with frontage on Linkhorn Bay and the creeks that feed the Lynnhaven River. Every home that closed here in the last two years was detached. Half were built before 1968 and only a handful date from the 1990s, so the streets read as one era: brick and frame houses on lots that run about three quarters of an acre at the median, far larger than the city's newer subdivisions. Five of the fourteen recent sales were waterfront, with bulkheads, docks and deep, navigable water. The rest sit a few blocks back on the same wide, tree-covered lots. NAS Oceana is about four miles away, which puts part of the neighborhood inside the 65 to 70 dB jet-noise contour; the other part is outside any contour.

Alanton Drive is the spine of the neighborhood, and the lots along it are big enough that most homes have room for a pool, a workshop or a detached garage. Water is the point of living here: owners on the bay launch from their own docks, and everyone else is a short drive from the public boat ramps on the Lynnhaven.
