About Newsome Park Elementary School
Newsome Park Elementary School opened in 1943 to serve children of the Newsome Park housing development, which was built during World War II for African-American defense workers, many employed at the Newport News Shipyard. The school and surrounding community are named for Joseph Thomas Newsome (1869-1942), a Newport News lawyer, newspaper editor, and civic leader noted as an early African-American attorney to practice before the Virginia Supreme Court. The building operated as an elementary school until 1980, served as a middle school from 1980 to 1995, and was then renovated and returned to elementary use in 1995.
Located at 4200 Marshall Avenue in the southeast section of Newport News (ZIP 23607), the school operates as a division Math, Science and Technology magnet within Newport News City Public Schools. It is classified by NCES as a midsize-city school and enrolled 386 students in grades PK-5 during the 2024-2025 school year.
