About Katherine Johnson Elementary School

Katherine Johnson Elementary School opened in 1956 as Lee Hall Elementary School, taking its original name from the nearby Lee Hall Mansion (built 1859). In 2021, the Newport News School Board unanimously voted to rename the school after Katherine G. Johnson, the NASA research mathematician whose orbital-mechanics calculations supported early U.S. crewed spaceflights; the change was one of four Newport News school renamings that removed names tied to the Confederacy.
