About Mary Passage Middle School
Mary L. Passage Middle School opened in 2000 in the Denbigh area of northern Newport News, Virginia, as part of Newport News City Public Schools. It is named for Mary Lipe Passage (1916-2003), a longtime Newport News educator who in 1965 became the first woman to lead a major Virginia high school (Ferguson High School) and later helped establish the division's first alternative school, Point Option.
The school serves students in grades 6 through 8 and is located at 400 Atkinson Way in a midsize-city setting. Its athletic teams and student body are known as the Panthers, and the school promotes a conduct framework it calls the PATH: Prepare Daily, Act Appropriately, Take Responsibility, and Have Respect.
