About Hilton Elementary School

Hilton Elementary School was completed in 1919 and is the oldest elementary school in Newport News still in operation. It was included in the original plan for Hilton Village, a planned English-village-style neighborhood built between 1918 and 1921 to house employees of Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company during World War I. The village, and the school site, took their name from Lt. John Pembroke Jones' former farm called "Hilton."

The school sits at 225 River Road within the Hilton Village historic district along the James River in the southern part of Newport News. Today it serves grades PK-5 as part of Newport News City Public Schools and operates a Communication Arts Magnet Program emphasizing reading, writing, and oral communication.
