About Stoney Run Elementary School

The school at 855 Lucas Creek Road in Newport News, Virginia, operated for decades as Horace H. Epes Elementary School, named for Horace Hardaway Epes (1849-1912), an early Newport News educator. In May 2021 the Newport News School Board voted unanimously to rename the school Stoney Run Elementary School, one of four district schools renamed at that time; the new name reflects the surrounding Stoney Run community. The building, address, and NCES identifier (510264001054) carried over unchanged, so records under the Epes name and the Stoney Run name refer to the same school.

Stoney Run Elementary is part of Newport News City Public Schools and serves students from pre-kindergarten through grade 5. It sits in the Denbigh section of northern Newport News, in a mid-size-city setting, and enrolled roughly 450 students in the 2024-2025 school year. The school was Fully Accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for 2025-2026.
