About Crittenden Middle School
Crittenden Middle School occupies a building on Jefferson Avenue in southeast Newport News that was originally constructed in 1949 as George Washington Carver High School, a school for Black students during the segregation era. The building later operated as Carver Intermediate School until 1971 and went through several changes before reopening in 1995 as Flora D. Crittenden Middle School. It is named for Flora Lonette Davis Crittenden (1924-2021), a longtime Newport News educator, guidance counselor, and civil rights figure who taught at Carver and later served eleven years in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Since 1995 the school has operated as Newport News' science, mathematics, and technology magnet, serving grades 6-8 while also offering a comprehensive general-studies program. It sits within Newport News City Public Schools in the lower-peninsula section of the Hampton Roads region.
