About Carver Elementary School
Carver Elementary School was built and opened in 1954 by principal Sadie Marie Yancey, serving grades one through seven. It is named for George Washington Carver (1864-1943), the African-American agricultural scientist and inventor. Over the decades the building's grade configuration changed several times: it became Carver Intermediate (grades 4-7) in 1971, Carver Middle School (grades 6-8) in 1981, and returned to an elementary configuration (grades K-5) in 1989, which it retains today.
The school is located at 6160 Jefferson Avenue in the midtown section of Newport News, Virginia, with Crittenden Middle School adjacent to the campus. It is part of Newport News City Public Schools and serves students from pre-kindergarten through grade 5.
