About Mary S. Peake Elementary School

The school at 57 Salina Street in Hampton, Virginia opened as John Tyler Elementary School, named for the tenth U.S. president and Virginia native. On May 19, 2021, the Hampton City School Board voted to rename it Mary S. Peake Elementary School, one of five Hampton schools renamed after local trailblazers following a research committee report on the origins of the schools' names. The new name honors Mary S. Peake, a 19th-century Hampton educator and humanitarian known for teaching under the Emancipation Oak. The school's 'Mighty Oaks' mascot references that same tree. Several of the school's web addresses (the 'tyl' subdomain) still reflect the former John Tyler name.

Mary S. Peake Elementary is a regular public elementary school serving grades PK through 5 within Hampton City Public Schools. NCES classifies its setting as a large suburban locale. In the 2024-2025 school year it enrolled 404 students.
