About Christopher C. Kraft Elementary School

Christopher C. Kraft Elementary School opened in 1966 in the Northampton section of Hampton, Virginia, built on a roughly seventeen-acre lot to relieve overcrowding at neighboring elementary schools. The building is notable for its experimental round design, originally containing 25 self-contained classrooms along with a cafeteria, activity room, clinic, library, and covered play area; it opened with 547 students. The school is named for Christopher C. Kraft Jr., a Hampton-area native and NASA flight-operations figure. Kraft returned as keynote speaker for the school's 25th anniversary in 1991. The school adopted the motto "Reaching for the Stars" in 1993-94.

The school is part of Hampton City Public Schools and serves elementary grades at 600 Concord Drive. In the 2024-2025 school year it enrolled 452 students. It is designated a Purple Star military-connected school. It was fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for 2025-2026.
