About George P. Phenix PreK-8 School

George P. Phenix PreK-8 School is a public school in the Hampton City Schools division, located at 1061 Big Bethel Road in a suburban residential section of Hampton, Virginia. It serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, and its athletic teams are known as the Panthers. The school carries the name of George Perley Phenix (1864-1930), a Maine-born educator who served as the fourth principal and first president of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University).

The Phenix name traces to the George P. Phenix Training School, which opened in 1931 as a teaching-laboratory school affiliated with Hampton Institute, where college students completed their student teaching. The earlier segregated Phenix High School operated until 1968; the original building survives on the Hampton University campus as Phenix Hall. The present PreK-8 school continues the Phenix name at its Big Bethel Road campus, several miles from the university.
