About Armstrong Elementary School

Armstrong Elementary School, officially branded as Armstrong School for the Arts, is the oldest continuously operating school in Hampton City Public Schools. According to the school, it was named in honor of the Armstrong family after the land on which it stands was donated by the children of Col. William Nevins Armstrong, brother of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) founder Gen. Samuel Chapman Armstrong. The school states it is celebrating 100 years of operation; an exact founding year is not published on its official pages. On September 29, 2014, Armstrong was named a National Blue Ribbon School, one of 287 public schools nationally recognized for the 2013-2014 year.

The school operates as an arts-integration program under the tagline 'Where Academics and Arts Share Center Stage,' incorporating visual arts, music, drama, dance, and artistic writing into the core subjects of English, mathematics, science, and social studies. It sits at 3401 Matoaka Road in Hampton, in a suburban residential setting, and serves kindergarten through grade 5 for families in its Hampton attendance zone.
