About Alfred S. Forrest Elementary School

Alfred S. Forrest Elementary School opened for the 1956-1957 school year as Bethel Elementary. When Bethel High School opened in 1969, the elementary school was renamed for Alfred Sylvester Forrest, a College of William & Mary alumnus and longtime Hampton educator who served as principal of Wythe Elementary beginning in 1923 and later as the first principal of George Wythe Junior High School when it opened in 1950. Forrest, a World War I Navy veteran and former Hampton Rotary Club president, retired in the early 1960s and died on February 12, 1970.

The school sits on Todds Lane on the west side of Hampton, Virginia. According to school history, the surrounding land was known in colonial times as Gust Woods after a three-day storm in 1667 felled many trees, later Sawyer's Swamp as timber was harvested, and eventually Todds Lane after the Todd family. Today Forrest Elementary is part of Hampton City Public Schools and serves students in kindergarten through grade 5.
