About A.W.E. Bassette Elementary School

A.W.E. Bassette Elementary School is a public PK-5 school in the Hampton City Public Schools division, located at 671 Bell Street in Hampton, Virginia. The school is named for Andrew William Ernest (A.W.E.) Bassette (1865-1941), a Hampton educator and lawyer who graduated from Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton University), co-founded the People's Building and Loan Association, and established Bassette Academy. According to the school's own history, it was named in his honor in 1895.
