About Francis Asbury Elementary School

Francis Asbury Elementary School is a public elementary school in the Fox Hill area of Hampton, Virginia, operated by Hampton City Public Schools. The school and the surrounding Asbury Avenue are named for Francis Asbury (1745-1816), a British-American Methodist minister who became one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States; the original building was designed in an English Tudor style partly as a nod to Bishop Asbury. In 1963-1964, part of the school was severely damaged by an electrical fire that started in the cafeteria, after which portions were rebuilt; a two-story section from that era remains in use.

The school sits at 140 Beach Road in the Fox Hill neighborhood of eastern Hampton, a coastal community near the Chesapeake Bay. It serves roughly 400 students in grades PK through 5 and uses the fox as its mascot, reflected in the school's 'Fox Strong' motto. It is classified by the National Center for Education Statistics as a large suburban school.
