About Booker Elementary School

Booker Elementary School was renamed Albert W. Patrick III Elementary by the Hampton City School Board in May 2021 (effective for the 2021-2022 school year); it operates at the same building at 160 Apollo Drive and carries the same NCES ID (510180000732). The original name honored a family that historically owned enslaved people, prompting the renaming for the Honorable Judge Albert W. Patrick III, a lifelong Hampton resident, community leader, and former school board chair. The school is one of the elementary schools in Hampton City Public Schools and serves grades PK-5.

The building is designed with classrooms arranged around an open courtyard, which contains a historic sycamore 'moon tree' grown from a seed flown aboard the Apollo 14 mission; students planted the seed on Arbor Day (April 30, 1976) after sixth-grader Marjorie White won a poem competition, a detail reflected in the school's Apollo Drive address. The school is a designated Purple Star School, recognizing support for military-connected students, consistent with its location in Hampton, Virginia.
