About Granby Elementary School
Granby Elementary School opened in September 1948 as the first elementary school built in Norfolk after World War II. Its parent-teacher association had been organized in 1944 with 52 charter members. Designed by architect Vernon Moore, the brick building with tile-walled interiors was constructed on nine acres of city-owned land at a cost of roughly $757,000. Enrollment grew rapidly in the early 1950s, prompting an eight-classroom addition and enlarged lunchroom in 1950, and by 1952 membership approached 1,300 in a building designed for about 900. Later additions included a recreation-center wing in 1969 (later used as the gymnasium) and further classrooms in 1986 and 1989.
The school sits on Newport Avenue in northern Norfolk, on a low peninsula near the Lafayette River and immediately adjacent to Granby High School. It is part of Norfolk City Public Schools and serves students from pre-kindergarten through grade 5.
