About Ocean View Elementary School
Ocean View Elementary School is a public elementary school in the Norfolk City Public Schools division, located at 350 West Government Avenue in the Ocean View section of Norfolk, Virginia. The Norfolk City Council awarded the construction contract in March 1937, and the school opened on March 10, 1939, at a final cost of roughly $300,000, partially funded through the Public Works Administration (PWA) under Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The original building included 22 classrooms, an auditorium, a lunchroom, and a playground, and its first principal was Miss Lucy Mason Holt. In 1947 the community presented the school with a 900-pound bell made by the Meneely Bell Company of Troy, New York.
The school sits in the Ocean View neighborhood along the northern edge of Norfolk near the Chesapeake Bay waterfront. It serves students in kindergarten through grade 5 and is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.
