About Maury High School

Matthew Fontaine Maury High School opened in 1911 and is the oldest high school in Norfolk, Virginia. Named for oceanographer and naval officer Matthew Fontaine Maury, the school is known for its neo-classical building at 322 Shirley Avenue and was completely renovated in 1986. It is part of Norfolk City Public Schools and serves students in grades 9-12.

The school sits in the Ghent area of Norfolk, an established residential district near downtown. Its athletic teams, the Commodores, compete in burnt orange and navy and have won Virginia High School League state titles in football and boys basketball. The city of Norfolk has been developing plans for a new Maury High School building on the current site.
