About W.H. Taylor Elementary School

W.H. Taylor Elementary School (officially Walter Herron Taylor Elementary) is a PK-5 public school in the Norfolk City Public Schools division, located at 1122 West Princess Anne Road in Norfolk's West Ghent neighborhood. The school is named for Walter Herron Taylor (1838-1916), a Norfolk banker, lawyer, railroad executive, and Confederate officer who served as an aide to General Robert E. Lee. The original school building, completed in 1917, was designed by Virginia architect John Kevan Peebles in the Colonial Revival style to complement the surrounding early-20th-century homes of West Ghent.

The original 1917 building was briefly listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 but was demolished in June 1999; a new W.H. Taylor Elementary School building opened on the site in 1999 and was dedicated in January 2000 (the historic listing was formally removed in 2001). Today the school serves roughly 400 students across pre-kindergarten through grade 5 and is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.
