About Matthew Whaley Elementary School
Matthew Whaley Elementary School is a public elementary school in the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools division, occupying a historic Georgian Revival building at 301 Scotland Street in the Peacock Hill area of Williamsburg, Virginia. The institution's name traces to an early-18th-century free school founded by Mary Whaley in memory of her young son Mattey (Matthew) Whaley. The present school building was designed by Virginia architect Charles M. Robinson and constructed in 1929-1930.
The building was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register in June 2004 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in August 2004. For much of its history the site was associated with teacher training for the College of William & Mary; it became a grammar school after James Blair High School opened in 1955. The school serves grades K-5 and enrolled 485 students in the 2024-2025 school year.
