About Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School
Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School opened in September 1989 as part of the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools division. It is named for Clara Byrd Baker (1886-1979), a longtime Virginia educator, civic leader, and suffragist who taught in James City County beginning in 1902 and later at Bruton Heights School until her 1952 retirement; she is remembered as the first woman to vote in Williamsburg.
The school serves students in prekindergarten through grade 5 at 3131 Ironbound Rd in a small-suburban setting on the western side of Williamsburg. It is a fully accredited neighborhood elementary school within the Williamsburg-James City County division and offers a gifted and talented program.
