About Lois S. Hornsby Middle School
Lois S. Hornsby Middle School opened to students on September 7, 2010, and was formally dedicated on October 2, 2010. It was built alongside J. Blaine Blayton Elementary School to replace the aging James Blair Middle School in the Williamsburg-James City County school division. The roughly 145,000-square-foot building was designed to house about 800 students and was the first school in the division to use a geothermal HVAC system. The school is named for Lois Hornsby, a longtime Williamsburg resident and philanthropist and the mother of musician Bruce Hornsby.
The school sits on Jolly Pond Road in James City County, in the Warhill area west of the City of Williamsburg, near Warhill High School. It serves grades 6-8 as part of Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools. The school's teams are the Hawks, and it has been recognized as a Virginia Purple Star School for its support of military-connected students.
