About Laurel Lane Elementary School
Laurel Lane Elementary School opened at the start of the 1965-66 school year at 112 Laurel Lane in Williamsburg, originally serving grades one through seven. Its campus-style design of round buildings connected by covered walkways was the locality's first departure from traditional school architecture and the first elementary school built after the 1953 formation of the joint Williamsburg-James City County school division. It was originally named Rawls Byrd Elementary after the district's retiring superintendent, and it was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 1992.
In February 2017 the Williamsburg-James City County School Board voted unanimously to rename the school Laurel Lane Elementary, effective July 1, 2017, after research documented that namesake Rawls Byrd had been a segregationist superintendent; the school's penguin mascot was retained. Today the suburban school serves roughly 500-600 students in grades PK-5 within the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools division.
