About Oscar Smith Middle School
Oscar Smith Middle School occupies the building at 2500 Rodgers Street in the South Norfolk section of Chesapeake, Virginia. The structure originally opened in 1954 as Oscar F. Smith High School, replacing the older South Norfolk High School. When Oscar F. Smith High School relocated to Great Bridge Boulevard in the Greenbrier section of the city in 1994, the Rodgers Street building was converted into Oscar Smith Middle School. Both schools are named for Oscar Frommel Smith (1891-1950), a Hampton Roads fertilizer businessman and civic leader; he is the only person to be the namesake of two Chesapeake schools.
The school is part of Chesapeake City Public Schools and serves students in grades 6 through 8. It sits in a large-city locale near the Elizabeth River in the older, formerly independent city of South Norfolk, which merged with Norfolk County to form the city of Chesapeake in 1963.
