About Hugo A. Owens Middle School

Hugo A. Owens Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake, Virginia, as part of Chesapeake City Public Schools. It is located at 1997 Horseback Run and enrolls roughly 1,290 students.

The school is named for Dr. Hugo Armstrong Owens Sr. (1916-2008), a dentist and civil rights leader who helped lead the desegregation of Portsmouth and, in 1970, became one of the first African Americans elected to the Chesapeake City Council, later serving as vice mayor. Old Dominion University's African American Cultural Center is also named in his honor.
