About Camp E. W. Young

Camp E. W. Young is a roughly 30-acre waterfront outdoor-education campground in Chesapeake, Virginia, operated by Norfolk City Public Schools. It is unusual among Virginia public schools in that it is an actual camp rather than a conventional building with resident enrollment; district students visit for hands-on, SOL-aligned science and environmental instruction. Second graders receive multi-day environmental science instruction (with a Nauticus partnership), fifth graders study shoreline stabilization and sixth graders study watershed and water-quality analysis through the Elizabeth River Project, and grades 3-7 may attend a free Green STEM summer camp featuring math enrichment, robotics, and field trips.

The camp traces its origins to Eleanor White Young, a Norfolk child advocate who organized community members to create a camp experience for Black youth from the city. The facility was renamed in her honor in 1947, the year after her death. The property, on a waterfront parcel in what was then rural Norfolk County, was originally purchased and run by the city before the school system assumed operation. The site sits along the Intracoastal Waterway at 145 Deepwater Drive.
