About First Academy

"First Academy" is the NCES/state directory name for the FIRST STEM Academy, a public career and technical education program operated by Suffolk City Public Schools and housed at The College and Career Academy at Pruden (CCAP) at 4169 Pruden Boulevard, Suffolk, Virginia. FIRST stands for "Fostering Innovation and Relevance Through STEM and Trades" and is one of Virginia's Governor's STEM Academies. It offers two career pathways: Interactive Media with a specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Engineering and Technology with a specialization in Modeling and Simulation. It draws students from Suffolk's three comprehensive high schools (King's Fork, Lakeland, and Nansemond River) rather than enrolling a standalone comprehensive student body.

The host facility, the College and Career Academy at Pruden, traces to 1970 when it opened as the Pruden Center for Industry and Technology, a regional vocational center named for Suffolk philanthropist Peter DeWitt Pruden. The campus sits on Pruden Boulevard (U.S. Route 460 Business) on the western side of the city of Suffolk, an area the U.S. Department of Education classifies as rural fringe.
