About Booker T. Washington Elementary School
Booker T. Washington Elementary traces its origins to 1913, when the Suffolk School Board opened the Booker T. Washington School to serve African American children in grades 1-8. Ninth grade was added in the 1920s, and a larger building followed in 1925 as enrollment grew; a senior high curriculum was added and the first high school class graduated in 1937. In 1953 the school moved to a new building roughly a mile and a half east, later transitioning from an intermediate school to its present role as an elementary school.
Today the school operates as a PK-5 elementary school within Suffolk City Public Schools at 204 Walnut Street in Suffolk, Virginia. Its NCES locale is classified as 'Town, Fringe.' As of the 2024-2025 school year it enrolled 362 students with about 25 full-time-equivalent teachers.
