About Westside Elementary School
Westside Elementary traces its roots to 1928, when the Isle of Wight Training School opened in an eight-room brick building on seven acres in Smithfield, replacing the earlier Riverview school. It was renamed Westside High School in 1960 and won a state football championship in 1966. When Isle of Wight County schools were integrated in 1969, high-school students moved to Smithfield High School and the building became Smithfield Elementary School; it returned to the Westside name in 2005 after a new Smithfield Middle School opened.
Today Westside Elementary is an Isle of Wight County Public Schools campus serving grades 4-6 at 800 West Main Street in Smithfield, with about 680 students and roughly 48 full-time teachers. The school occupies its historic building on the original site; the division has selected an architect for a replacement school planned for a new location, and the school's own site notes it is in its final years before moving to the new facility.
