About Hardy Elementary School

Hardy Elementary School is an Isle of Wight County Public Schools elementary school on Old Stage Highway in the Smithfield area. The original one-story Hardy Elementary dates to circa 1961; after decades of use, the county opted in 2018 to replace rather than renovate it again, and a new two-story building of more than 100,000 square feet broke ground in October 2021 on land adjacent to the old school. The replacement school opened with a ribbon-cutting on August 28, 2023, and portions of the former building were designated for reuse as the division's central office.

Today Hardy Elementary serves prekindergarten through fourth grade, enrolling 649 students in 2024-2025 with 50 full-time-equivalent teachers (about 13 students per teacher, per NCES). The current campus was built with capacity for nearly 900 students and includes a dedicated STEM lab and a project-based learning space in each grade wing. The school is rated Fully Accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for 2025-2026.
