About Smithfield High School

Smithfield High School graduated its first class in 1906, making it one of the oldest high schools in Isle of Wight County. The school moved into its current building on Turner Drive in 1980; most of the original facility was demolished in the 1990s, though its gymnasium was preserved and remodeled as the Luter Family YMCA in 1995. The teams are called the Packers, a nod to the town's meat-packing industry, and the mascot is a razorback hog.

Today Smithfield High is a four-year public high school (grades 9-12) in Isle of Wight County Public Schools, located just outside the town of Smithfield in a rural-fringe setting south of the James River. It enrolled 1,322 students in 2024-25 with about 82 full-time-equivalent teachers, and it is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for 2025-26. The school offers Advanced Placement and dual-enrollment coursework along with career and technical education programs, and its athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's Bay Rivers District.
