About Waterview Elementary School
The school at 3649 Hartford Street opened in September 2002 as John Tyler Elementary School, part of Portsmouth City Public Schools. In 2021 the Portsmouth School Board voted 8-1 to rename three schools that honored Confederate figures or segregationists; effective July 1, 2021, John Tyler Elementary was renamed Waterview Elementary School. (The former U.S. president John Tyler had joined the Confederate government late in his life.) The two names refer to the same building and NCES record.
The school serves the London Oaks, Waterview, Port Norfolk, West Park View, Shea Terrace and Glenshellah sections of Portsmouth, in the city's west/Waterview area. It enrolls roughly 576 students in grades K-6 and is classified by NCES as a small-city locale.
