About Cradock Elementary School

Cradock Elementary School is a K-6 public school in the Cradock neighborhood of Portsmouth, Virginia, part of Portsmouth City Public Schools. It sits at 18 Dahlgren Avenue within the Cradock Historic District, a National Register-listed area developed beginning in 1918 by the United States Housing Corporation as a planned community to house the influx of workers at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War I. The neighborhood, one of the earliest planned pedestrian communities in the United States, was built on a 310-acre tract formerly known as Afton Farm and was named for British Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock.

The school serves a predominantly residential community south of downtown Portsmouth near Paradise Creek. In 2024-2025 it enrolled 616 students across kindergarten through grade 6. The school is fully accredited under Virginia's Standards of Accreditation for 2025-2026, though it was identified for federal Comprehensive Support and Improvement in 2024-2025.
