About Cradock Technical & Career Center

Cradock Technical & Career Center is a career and technical education (CTE) facility operated by Portsmouth Public Schools at 4300 George Washington Highway in the Cradock area of Portsmouth, Virginia. The center sits in Cradock, one of the earliest federally planned communities in the United States. Cradock was developed in 1918 by the U.S. Housing Corporation to house the rapid influx of workers at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War I, built on the 310-acre former Afton Farm along Paradise Creek and named for British Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock. The neighborhood, laid out with a commercial square, churches, recreation areas, and a streetcar line to the shipyard, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Local histories note the Cradock name was later applied to the former Alfred J. Mapp Junior High building after the original Cradock High School closed in 1993.
