About Cradock Middle School

Cradock Middle School is a public school in the Portsmouth City Public Schools division, serving grades 7 and 8 at 21 Alden Avenue in Portsmouth, Virginia. The campus sits within the Cradock neighborhood, a planned residential community developed beginning in 1918 by the United States Housing Corporation to house workers drawn to the nearby Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War I. The Cradock Historic District, encompassing hundreds of Colonial Revival and Bungalow-style homes surrounding the school, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Cradock name honors Sir Christopher Cradock, a British Royal Navy admiral lost at sea in 1914.

The current school is designated for Comprehensive Support and Improvement under federal accountability rules and was Fully Accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for the 2025-2026 school year.
