Commute Times to Hampton Roads Major Employers

Hampton Roads' largest civilian employers — healthcare systems, shipbuilders, universities, and corporate HQs — pull workforce from across the region. If your housing search starts with "where do I work?", this guide maps the best neighborhoods to live in for each major employer.

Live commute times appear on every listing card on the search page when civilian mode is selected. Browse homes →

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

Hampton Roads' largest single-employer medical campus, anchoring the EVMS / ODU corridor. Ghent and Park Place are walkable; Larchmont, West Ghent, and Riverpoint are short drives. Olde Towne Portsmouth is a 12-minute commute via the tunnel.

Norfolk Southern HQ

Downtown Norfolk corporate HQ near the waterfront. Best commutes from East Beach, Larchmont, Olde Towne Portsmouth (ferry-accessible), and Edgewater along the Lafayette River.

Newport News Shipbuilding

Largest industrial employer in Virginia. Workforce housing is concentrated in Hilton Village, North End, and Denbigh. Hampton (Wythe, Phoebus) is 10–15 min via I-664 / James River Bridge.

Old Dominion University

Norfolk west-side university campus. Park Place, Larchmont, Lafayette-Winona, and West Ghent are within a 10-minute commute. Light rail extension serves the campus.

Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters

Adjacent to Sentara Norfolk General — same neighborhoods serve both. Ghent, Larchmont, Riverpoint, and Olde Towne Portsmouth via the Midtown Tunnel.

GEICO Virginia Beach

Eastern Virginia Beach campus near the Oceanfront. Best commutes from Aragona, Kempsville, Bayside, and the Pungo / Sandbridge southern beaches.

ADP Norfolk

Downtown Norfolk corporate office. Same commute corridor as Norfolk Southern — Ghent, Park Place, East Beach, Olde Towne Portsmouth.

Hampton Roads commute realities

Hampton Roads commutes are dominated by a handful of bridge-tunnels: the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT), Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT), Midtown Tunnel, and Downtown Tunnel. Living on the "wrong" side of one can add 20–30 minutes during peak hours. The general rule: if you work on the South Side (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk), live on the South Side. Same for the Peninsula (Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, York County).
