Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2027: Benefits & Resources
Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2027 is Friday, May 7, 2027, the Friday before Mother's Day (May 9). It recognizes the spouses of service members, and it is a good moment to check what has changed: in 2026 the Defense Department renamed its spouse career program SpouseWorks (formerly SECO), renamed MyCAA the SpouseWorks Scholarship, and on July 27, 2026 removed the rank limit on that $4,000 scholarship. This guide covers the day, the benefits and the support available through Hampton Roads installations, as of October 2026.
Much of that support targets work. A December 2025 Justice Department letter put the military spouse unemployment rate at around 20%, against 4.4% nationally, and cited the Defense Department's 2024 Active Duty Spouse Survey finding that unemployment was about 33% higher for spouses who had made a PCS move.

When is Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2027?
Friday, May 7, 2027. The day always falls on the Friday before Mother's Day, so it moves each year: it was May 8 in 2026 and will be May 12 in 2028.
President Reagan proclaimed the first Military Spouse Day for May 23, 1984 (Proclamation 5184, April 17, 1984), recognizing what spouses contribute to the readiness and well-being of service members. The date was later fixed as the Friday before Mother's Day. Installations, the USO and nonprofits usually announce their events in the spring, so check your installation's Military and Family Support Center calendar in April 2027.
Military spouse benefits
- TRICARE health coverage as a family member of an active-duty service member or retiree
- Commissary, exchange and MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) access with a dependent ID card
- Housing: military family housing, or Basic Allowance for Housing paid to the service member at the with-dependents rate
- Survivor Benefit Plan options when the service member retires
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for a surviving spouse when the service member died on active duty or from a service-connected condition, or in some cases after a long-term total disability rating
- Transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill: the service member needs at least 6 years of service when the transfer is approved and must agree to 4 more; a spouse can use it right away but does not get the monthly housing allowance while the service member is on active duty
- VA home loan eligibility for certain surviving spouses (see the FAQ)

Spouse employment programs
In June 2026 the Defense Department's Office of Spouse Employment began a phased rebrand of the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program as SpouseWorks. Older names still appear on many sites, so here is how they map:
- SpouseWorks (formerly SECO): free career coaching, a job board, scholarships, fellowships and employer connections. Schedule a coach through Military OneSource at 800-342-9647, available 24/7.
- SpouseWorks Scholarship (formerly MyCAA): up to $4,000, generally capped at $2,000 per fiscal year (October 1 to September 30), for a license, certification, associate degree, or continuing education needed to keep a license. It does not cover bachelor's or graduate degrees, or fees such as registration, technology or parking. Since July 27, 2026 there is no rank restriction; the sponsor must be on active duty or on qualifying Title 10 orders, and the spouse needs a high school diploma or equivalent. Military OneSource lists Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force spouses.
- SpouseWorks Fellowship (formerly Career Accelerator): paid, full-time 12-week fellowships with host employers, plus mentorship and coaching.
- Military Spouse Employer Partnership (formerly Military Spouse Employment Partnership, or MSEP): more than 1,000 employer partners that have committed to recruiting, hiring, promoting and retaining military spouses (as of June 2026).
- Installation employment help: for example, Fleet & Family Support Center Norfolk runs a Family Employment Readiness Program with career counseling, resume and cover-letter help, and interview preparation.
Moving a professional license to Virginia
Two layers of law help licensed spouses after a PCS move. Under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (50 U.S.C. 4025a, added by the Veterans Auto and Education Improvement Act of 2022), a service member or spouse who relocates on military orders can use a license in good standing from another state, within its scope of practice, after applying to the new state's licensing authority. Military OneSource lists the conditions: provide a copy of the orders, have actively used the license in the two years before the move, and accept the new state's standards and discipline. Since the FY2025 defense bill (December 23, 2024), licenses to practice law are covered too.
Virginia adds its own rule. Virginia Code 54.1-119 requires boards under DPOR and the Department of Health Professions to expedite licenses for qualifying military spouses, and if a board cannot finish its review within 20 days of a complete application, it must issue a temporary license good for up to 12 months.
Tax protections
Three federal laws shape where a military spouse pays state income tax, according to Military OneSource:
- Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (MSRRA), signed November 11, 2009: a spouse who moves with the service member on orders can keep the same state of legal residence as the service member.
- Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018: a spouse can choose the service member's state of legal residence even without having lived there.
- Veterans Auto and Education Improvement Act of 2022: the couple can choose among the service member's residence, the spouse's residence, or the permanent duty station.
These rules cover the spouse's earned income. Other income, such as rent from a property, can still be taxed by the state where it is earned. If you buy a home in Hampton Roads while keeping another state of legal residence, ask a tax professional or your installation's free legal assistance office how your choices fit together.
Spouse support at Hampton Roads installations
Each Hampton Roads installation has a Military and Family Support Center (the Navy's are Fleet and Family Support Centers) with relocation, employment, financial and deployment help, including Naval Station Norfolk, Naval Air Station Oceana, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story and Joint Base Langley-Eustis. The MilitaryINSTALLATIONS directory lists each center's programs and contacts. The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia has run spouse programs such as Coffee Connections at installations including Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and national groups such as Blue Star Families, the National Military Family Association and Hiring Our Heroes offer programs and events.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2027?
Friday, May 7, 2027. It is always the Friday before Mother's Day.
What benefits do military spouses get?
TRICARE, commissary, exchange and MWR access, military housing or BAH at the with-dependents rate, a transferable Post-9/11 GI Bill, SpouseWorks employment and scholarship programs, state tax residency protections, and survivor benefits.
What happened to MyCAA?
It is now the SpouseWorks Scholarship. It still pays up to $4,000 toward a license, certification or associate degree, and since July 27, 2026 it is open to spouses of service members of any rank who are on active duty or qualifying Title 10 orders.
What is MSRRA?
The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act of 2009. Together with laws passed in 2018 and 2022, it lets a military spouse keep or choose a state of legal residence for income tax instead of being taxed where the service member is stationed.
Can military spouses get a VA loan?
The home loan entitlement belongs to the eligible service member or veteran, and a married couple can buy together using it. A surviving spouse can get a Certificate of Eligibility in their own name if the veteran died in service or from a service-connected disability and the spouse did not remarry, or remarried at age 57 or older (special rules apply to remarriages before December 16, 2003). Spouses of service members who are missing in action or prisoners of war can also qualify, and surviving spouses receiving DIC do not pay the VA funding fee.
Are military spouses eligible for the GI Bill?
Yes, through a transfer. The service member needs at least 6 years of service when the transfer is approved, must agree to 4 more years, and must request it through milConnect while still serving. A spouse can use the benefit right away but does not receive the monthly housing allowance while the service member is on active duty.
Can I transfer my professional license to Virginia?
Often, yes. Federal law lets a spouse use a license in good standing after a move on military orders, and Virginia Code 54.1-119 requires expedited review, with a temporary license of up to 12 months if a board cannot finish within 20 days of a complete application.
What support is available for Hampton Roads military spouses?
Each installation's Military and Family Support Center or Fleet and Family Support Center, the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia, SpouseWorks coaching through Military OneSource, and national nonprofits such as Blue Star Families and the National Military Family Association.
How can civilians honor military spouses?
Mark Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 7, 2027, hire through the Military Spouse Employer Partnership, support nonprofits such as the National Military Family Association and Blue Star Families, and volunteer with local programs like the USO.

About the Hampton Roads Real Estate Market
Hampton Roads is one of the most dynamic real estate markets on the East Coast, anchored by the largest naval complex in the world at Naval Station Norfolk and home to roughly 120,000 active-duty, reserve, and civilian Department of Defense personnel. The region spans seven cities — Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Newport News — plus the Peninsula communities of Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Poquoson, with each market carrying its own personality, school district, and price profile.
Buying or selling here means thinking about more than just a house. Tidewater geography means flood zones, hurricane preparation, and waterfront premiums matter. Military presence means BAH affordability, PCS season inventory crunches (May through August), and VA loan eligibility are top of mind for a meaningful share of every neighborhood. School quality varies block by block, especially across the seven independent city school divisions, and is often the deciding factor for relocating families.
Why Buyers and Sellers Choose VaHome
Tom & Dariya Milan, Realtors focus on the Hampton Roads region with deep expertise in military relocation, VA financing, and the trade-offs that local buyers actually face. From listing strategy that gets your home in front of the right relocating buyer to buyer representation that respects your BAH cap and PCS timeline, the team treats every transaction as a long-term relationship. The site is built to make decisions clearer: BAH-aware search, drive-time mapping to every major installation, neighborhood guides written by people who live here, and a calculator that shows real monthly cost — taxes, insurance, HOA, and PMI included — instead of a teaser headline number. Brokered by LPT Realty.
